Activist Alert from MindFreedom International

60 Minutes: Let Psychiatric Survivors Speak for Themselves! Stop Deceiving the Public!

The CBS TV news show, "60 Minutes" segment "Untreated Mental Illness an Imminent Danger" (aired on September 29th) was shameful and portrayed people with psychiatric histories as violent, inhuman, unworthy of compassion and incapable of making their own decisions. They offered one point of view from E.Fuller Torrey, whose solution is more forced treatment and a life sentence of psychiatric institutionalization and incarceration.

The segment deceived the viewing public with irresponsible journalism because CBS did not offer another viewpoint. Viewers could have learned that psychiatric survivors can and do speak about their own experiences.

Mindfreedom is fighting for human rights and alternatives to mental health treatment and non-violence in the mental health system. We join with our supporters, allies, and psychiatric survivor organizations in requesting CBS' 60 Minutes to air a future segment with accurate information and alternative perspectives.

Please join us in calling upon the CBS TV show, "60 Minutes" to interview psychiatric survivors who are surviving from the harmful effects of psychiatric drugs and forced electroshock, who are using non-medical model approaches for healing.

Dorothy Dundas

While institutionalized for three years as an adolescent in the 1960's, MindFreedom member Dorothy Washburn Dundas was labeled a "schizophrenic" and forced to undergo 40 combined insulin coma-electroshock "treatments." Dorothy says, "I experienced and witnessed many atrocities. I believe that luck, determination, and my own anger and one compassionate advocate were my best friends on the road to my ultimate survival and freedom." Through a number of op-ed pieces, she has voiced her opposition to abusive psychiatric practices. Her poster, "Behind Locked Doors," which she created from her hospital records, is used in training programs. Dorothy lives in the Boston area where she has raised her four wonderful children. She founded and is the sole driver in her "safe, friendly and reliable" car service called The Crystal Lake Express.
