On June 11th the Friendly Spike Theatre Band will head west to Vancouver to read Tied Together, a new play about Mad People's History. The presentation will take place as part of Simon Fraser University's Madness, Citizenship and Social Justice Conference.
About the conference, Organizer Bob Menzies suggests; "Our objective is to provide a form in which critical topics and issues related to madness, citizenship, human rights and the role of the 'psy' professions can be explored across a range of intersecting positions and perspectives. Participants and delegates will include users/survivors, activists, academics, advocates, practitioners and community workers from the local Vancouver area, across Canada and around the world. The play Tied Together, focuses on patient labour at The Toronto Hospital for the Insane, 999 Queen St. W. (today's CAMH). The story grows from photographs of three patients, taken during the early 1900's; May F. Audrey B. and Mathilda K. These photographs are, also, currently part of Out From Under, Disability History and Things to Remember, an exhibit presented by Ryerson University's School of Disability Studies, at the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) until July 13th.
Actors taking a part in the Vancouver presentation of Tied Together are;
Ruth Ruth Stackhouse, Anna Monti Di Oro, Myrna Schacherl, Linda Cater and Helen Posno. With additional acting by JiJi Voronka, Erick Fabris and Richard Ingram.
The Friendly Spike Theatre Band would like to thank Access on Ability, Reva Gerstein Legacy Fund, The Canada Council Touring Artists fund, The Ryerson School of Disability Studies, Simon Fraser University and our Theatre Angels for helping us meet the expenses of this trip.
