MindFreedom Ghana Training

In April 2011, MFI director David Oaks and board member Celia Brown traveled across the world to Accra, Ghana in Africa.

The Open Society Institute's Disability Rights Initiative awarded MFI a grant to train activists in MindFreedom Ghana in community organizing and working with cross-disability groups. (The photo in upper right is after an training session.)

Joining the MindFreedom delegation was Tirza Leibowitz from OSI, as well as Bob Dinerstein, Professor of Law, Director of Clinical Programs at American University Washington College of Law.

The delegation had the opportunity to meet community activists, leaders from the cross-disability movement, and the Deputy Minister of Health, as well as tour a psychiatric institution in Accra.

It was a learning experience for everyone involved. There is a lot of work to be done, and we hope to continue working with our partners for human rights in mental health in Ghana.

The delegation is expected to file a complaint about human rights violations in the institution with the United Nations.
