Description:
Despite decades of reported “progress” in the treatment of people labeled mentally ill, the recipients of such services still frequently describe being disrespected and traumatized. Too often, people are led to believe that their mental health problem will inevitably be lifelong and that their only choice in treatment is medication, with no help with getting off once they’ve gotten on. And in spite of Martin Luther King’s point that “human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted,” most mental health services seek primarily to make people “normal” and “adjusted,” rather than helping people find ways to live successfully with their uniqueness.
A recent City of Eugene Resolution affirmed that choice in mental health services, including both drug and non-drug options, and treatment oriented toward complete recovery, is a human right. Mental health consumers and activists are now asking that Lane County ensure these human rights by adopting guidelines directing that consumers get accurate and empowering information, a range of recovery-oriented choices in treatment, and adequate assistance when they attempt to get off medications safely.
Speaker bio's:
David W. Oaks is director of MindFreedom International, an independent coalition based in Eugene working for human rights and alternatives in the mental health system. David is a survivor of psychiatric abuse who has been a community organizer for 33 years working with mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors.
Tracey “TC” Dumas experienced a wide range of abuse and trauma in the mental health system beginning at age 18. Despite these difficulties, she was able to return to school and earn a PhD at the University of Oregon at age 54. Starting with battles against racial and gender discrimination experienced first in her childhood and later in her work addressing mental health issues, she has been a consistent activist and advocate for human rights.
Ron Unger is a licensed clinical social worker and educator specializing in psychological approaches to psychosis and associated trauma. He has been outspoken about human rights issues and the need for real change in the mental health system, and is the coordinator for MindFreedom Lane County.
NOTE: The event will also be broadcast on radio, cable tv, and YouTube. For information on this see the City Club Web site at:
