Dear Linda, I'm sending in bits and pieces because I'm trying to avoid having the whole thing dumped. I've had that happen more than once and it's very discouraging.
Chris entered into Edgefield's Children's Center in March 1997 at age 7 yrs. He turned 8 May 15,1997. From there he was sent to Oregon State Hospital in May 1999 to the children's unit in 40A. That unit was closed down Jan. 21,2001. On Jan. 21,2001 Chris was sent to Perry Centers secure unit, the SCIP unit, which was an extension of the hospital. Chris went to the Christie School from SCIP on his 14th birthday due to SCIP's age restrictions. June 9,2004 Chris came home with problems I would not have imagined.
All together, Chris was at home for about 1 year since March 1997, not counting many weekend visits. The impact and influence of being raised in secure, strict and locked psychiatric institutions had severe consequences. Love nurturing, security, moral and values were nonexistant. Belittlement, threats, locked seclusion's,and various kinds of restraints were every day occurrences. Chris is extremely blessed. He has had an amazing recovery. He managed to get through withdraws when nobody in the system would acknowledge them. He was scared and thought he was loosing his mind but I was blessed with being able to say the right things to keep him holding on. Now that his mind is so clear I'm having amuch more difficult time convincing him to keep fighting. The United States has not been the land of the free and the home of the brave for Chris.
It has been pure hell for him. It has been lies, pain and suffering. An extremely playful and energetic little boy gets drugged because the daycares and schools want quiet, cooperative kids. A distraught mother asks for assistance because her little boy is acting strange and aggressive after an abusive "summer" visit with his father. She goes in trust to a doctor and looses her child and her rights for the rest of the child's life! I have despaired and grieved beyond belief. I have cried until my eyes swelled shut. I have pursued enough research, read enough books, discussed with enough physicians, etc. that I should have a respectable degree. Yet, I'm not heard, taken seriously, or given the time of day.
My son's record has many misleading and false recordings in it. Since Chris has been in MacLaren this fraud continues and I have been helpless to stop it. People are afraid to make waves because my son could suffer further since Oregon Youth Authority now has custody. If I had money I could hire the appropriate attorney to get my son free. But that is not reality. Reality is the system is corrupt and many don't care or understand because it is not their child. It is not close enough to scare them or rip their heart out. That is also a tragedy with the majority of institutional staffing. Compassion is absent and most are too quick to believe what they read without looking for
