David was born and raised working class on Chicago's South Side. He won a number of scholarships to attend Harvard, and while a college student there he was locked up five times in psychiatric institutions. Harvard placed David as a volunteer advocate for change in the mental health system, and he graduated anyway with honors. He now lives in Oregon, where he directs MindFreedom International (MFI). This is David's 31st year working as a human rights activist in this field.

MFI is an independent nonprofit coalition defending human rights and promoting humane alternatives in the mental health system. MFI is accredited by the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with Consultative Roster Status.
