Oregon Consumer Survivor Coalition

Representatives from several groups of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors in Oregon have formed a steering committee for a state-wide coalition. The official name is Oregon Mental Health Consumer and Psychiatric Survivor Coalition, and Articles of Incorporation were successfully filed with the State of Oregon on 31 August 2007. MindFreedom Oregon won a grant from McKenzie River Gathering to help provide technical assistance. The nonprofit technical assistance center of attorney David Atkin has filed incorporation papers and is assisting with the legal end of the start-up. [Update 30 Jan. 2008]

We helped STOP HB 3524 and HB 2995: Defend Privacy of Oregonians with Psychiatric Diagnoses!

HB 3524, if it had passed the 2007 Oregon legislative session, would have allowed Oregon police to create a database of certain Oregonians with psychiatric labels. HB 2995 would have allowed private mental health care information to be disclosed by health care practitioners without permission. Because of citizens speaking out in testimony and letters and calls, including following MindFreedom Oregon alerts, these two bills were STOPPED! Thank you! [Update July 2007]

It's a beautiful mind: Schizophrenic experience leads man to medicine

Diagnosed with schizophrenia, a Princeton PhD's dehumanizing experience in psych wards leads to a career in psychiatry, with an aim to fix the broken mental health system, reports East Oregonian. Fully recovered, Dr. Dan Fisher emerges from the experience to become a member of the White House Commission on Mental Health and the executive director of the National Empowerment Center, a resource center for psychiatric survivors.

Oregon Ted Governor vs. state-wide voice of mental health consumers

Information about how Oreegon's Governor Ted Kulongoski has -- for more than six years -- refused to grant any resources for the state-wide voice of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors. Ever since January 2002, the Governor's first month in office, he has continued to propose zero funds for activities such as a mental health consumer affairs office. Most USA states have some kind of funding to support the state-wide empowerment and voice of mental health clients. Not Oregon. Ask the Governor, "Why Zero?"
