ABOUT THE FILM:

The Doctor Who Hears Voices tells the true story of Ruth, a new doctor in England, who has begun to hear a male voice telling her to kill herself.

Ruth is suspended from her job when she admits being depressed and suicidal. But she says nothing about the voice, to avoid being fired and forced to take medications she doesn't want. Instead, she goes to maverick psychologist Rufus May, who believes recovery without medication is possible -- because he earlier made such a recovery himself! The film follows her unorthodox journey as she strives to combat the "voice" and regain her job.

Along the way, the film artfully explores issues such as the role of freedom of choice versus coercion in the treatment of risky mental states, and the possible relationship between "hearing voices" and unresolved past trauma. View the trailer at

Leah Harris

Leah Harris, a second generation psychiatric survivor, discovered MindFreedom in 2000 when she was 25 years old. Her first act in the mad movement was to tell her story of oppression and resistance, and to help edit stories for MindFreedom's Oral History Project. Since then, she has been working in various ways to help achieve the vision of MindFreedom: an end to all forms of psychiatric oppression, healing of all forms of "normality," and the creation of vibrant, colorful communities that honor and celebrate diversity, difference, and the full range of human experience.
