Why start a MindFreedom affiliate?

by David W. Oaks last modified 2008-05-06 11:43

Here's encouragement to begin an affiliate from psychiatric survivor Mary Maddock, of Cork, Ireland. Mary and her husband Jim helped start MindFreedom Ireland. She hopes you will consider starting an affiliate, too.

Mary and Jim Maddock of MindFreedom IrelandI have found becoming an affiliate of MindFreedom International very empowering and supportive.  It has helped me in my recovery from psychiatric abuse and it has also given me the strength to encourage and support other psychiatric survivors both nationally and internationally.

All you need to form an affiliate are a few good hardworking people you can trust, a few good people who want to work for a non-violent revolution in the mental health system. You should try to have as little bureaucracy as possible with the emphasis in working together and respecting each others opinions.

In our case Jim and I being in the same family was a bonus.  Start small with a view to growing slowly and be satisfied with every little success accomplished.

We feel we have information, togetherness, inspiration, leadership, encouragement and empowerment because we are part of a wider movement which has survived over many, many years. Its present leader David Oaks and its board members are encouraging us every step of the way.

THANK YOU, MindFreedom International, we are proud and honoured to be your affiliate, MindFreedom Ireland.
