From July 7th to July 14th, 2013, MindFreedom launched their first Creative Maladjustistment Week (CMW). For this campaign, people from all around the world celebrated their own “creative maladjustistments” to society in their own colorful, loud, and joyful ways. (new website launched: cmweek.org)

The inspiration for CMW derives from this quote by Dr. Martin Luther King: “The salvation of the world lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.” MindFreedom believed that he was right, and those at MindFreedom were working to fulfill Martin Luther King’s dream of non-conformity and loving, non-violent revolution, by celebrating maladjustments to areas of society that needed some dissent!

Creative Maladjusters abide by the philosophy of “man’s inhumanity to man,” and subsequently, are devoted to these topics below:

  • Racial equality
  • Religious tolerance
  • Economic fairness
  • Peace
  • Ecological sustainability and energy security
  • Individual liberty
  • Fighting psychiatric profiling and human rights abuses in the mental health system
  • Transparent and corruption-free government
  • Community and family values

Creative Maladjustment, defined, is a natural human response to oppression, an organic and highly adaptable way to oppose injustice.

Each day of the week featured a different “creative maladjustment” to society. Here is the schedule below:

  • Sunday (7/7): Day of Creativity
  • Monday (7/8): Day of Action & Movement
  • Tuesday (7/9): Day of Laughter and Joyful Noise
  • Wednesday (7/10): Day of Kindness
  • Thursday (7/11): Day of Self Care
  • Friday (7/12): Day of Community Care
  • Saturday (7/13): Legacy of Lunacy
  • Sunday (7/14): Day of Pride

As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “the salvation of the world lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.” We at MindFreedom believe that HE WAS RIGHT, and we’re working to fulfill Martin Luther King’s dream of non-conformity and loving, non-violent revolution in the here and now by establishing CREATIVE MALADJUSTMENT WEEK (July 7-July 14, 2013), a time to CELEBRATE our maladjustments to the parts of society that need a little dissent!
