IAACM launched!

— filed under:

Martin Luther King, Jr. called for an "International Association for Advancement of Creative Maladjustment" more than 10 times in his speeches and writing. What Time Magazine dismissed as a "half joke," Mad Pride has made into a reality!

IAACM launched!

The IAACM was launched at a retreat at Wisdom House.

13 JULY 2007:

MindFreedom and Mad Pride Help Make This MLK Dream a Reality, Today!

Screen the World on 11 October 2007!

LITCHFIELD, CONNECTICUT: In his speeches and essays, Martin Luther King, Jr. would frequently say that psychologists had a favorite word, "maladjusted," but that we ought to be maladjusted to oppression. MLK said the world was in "dire need" of a new organization: The International Association for the Advancement of Creative Maladjustment.

At the MindFreedom International conference/retreat held at Wisdom House in Connecticut, that dream became a reality.

At a Mad Pride event, the participants unanimously launched the IAACM.

This is not just another organization. YOU are a leader in the IAACM if you choose to be and if you follow MLK's nonviolent guideline.

How?

1) Hold a creative, peaceful event that challenges what is called "normal." Show us your creative maladjustment!

2) If you video it, then upload it onto a free public video platform such as google. Tag it as IAACM.

3) If possible, e-mail us a brief report and digital photo to news@mindfreedom.org, with the code number for your google video if you did one.

4) We will do our best to get out the word!

That's it! Simple, sweet, and combining the latest in 21st century "viral Internet activism" with a dream from one of the leaders of the 20th century, Martin Luther, King, Jr.

This just in:

Save the date of 11 October 2007. This is considered "Mental Health Screening Day."

We will hold nonviolent IAACM events on that day, and that week.

Anchor events are already set for:

St. Louis outside of Alternatives 2007. This event is independent from, though supportive of, the Alternatives 2007 conference. For info on the Alternatives 2007 conference see: http://www.alternatives2007.org/

Australia: Mad Pride Australia 2007 events were also held in October, click here.

Brussels, Belgium is also holding a Mad Pride event earlier that week.

Chuck Hughes is a psychiatric survivor activist from Santa Barbara, California.

"I find inspiration and mental support in MindFreedom," says Chuck. "I like associating with like-minded activists for human rights in mental health. When I go into a Board or Commission and say I am a member of MindFreedom International. It gives what I say a lot more validity and my voice carries a lot farther. My first of eight involuntarily institutionalizations was at age 23. I have witnessed much injustice in mental health. I have been involved with the user and survivor movement since 1992. My goal is to help stop forced outpatient psychiatric procedures, seclusion, restraints and other human rights violations, psychiatric abuse and torture. Of particular concern is the elimination of forced electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) on people of all ages."
