Don Weitz Bio

Here is information provided by Don Weitz in his own words.

Don Weitz - A Short Biographical Note

Don Weitz is a psychiatric survivor of insulin subcoma shock and an antipsychiatry activist. For over 30 years (since 1974), he has been active in the antipsychiatry movement.

Don is co-founder of the self-help group On Our Own (1977-1996) and Phoenix Rising (1980-1990) - the first antipsychiatry magazine in Canada he co-founded with Carla McKague.

With Dr. Bonnie Burstow, he is also co-editor of Shrink Resistant:The Struggle Against Psychiatry in Canada (1988), and writer of numerous angry letters to the editor (mostly unpublished).

Since 1983, Don has helped to organize public forums and protests against electroshock ("E.C.T.") in Toronto. He is co-founder of the Ontario Coalition to Stop Electroshock (1983-1989), Resistance Against Psychiatry (R.A.P.), and the Coalition Against Psychiatric Assault (CAPA) http://capa.oise.utoronto.ca.

Don continues working with other survivor-activists and groups to abolish electroshock, which he labels "a crime against humanity."

As a social justice activist, Don is also a member of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP), an actor with the Friendly Spike Theatre Band, host-producer of "Antipsychiatry Radio" on CKLN (88.1M) in Toronto.

In April 2007, he was presented with an Award in Advocacy by the Mental Health Legal Committee. He is now busy writing a book.
