Attorney fighting forced electroshock on MFI Radio Live this Wednesday!

Simone D. has already had 200 electroshocks, and the New York Office of Mental Health wants to do 30 more forced electroshocks over her expressed wishes. You can hear one or both of the attorneys for Simone D., who has been fighting to stop her forced electroshock in a public New York State psychiatric facility called Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.

These attorneys have fought hard to stop other forced electroshocks, and are experts in their field. New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) may claim to support "consumer-direction" and "empowerment," but you can hear from attorneys who fight on behalf of psychiatric survivors like Simone D.

Incredibly, Simone D., who speaks primarily Spanish, has been denied years of any Spanish-speaking counselors by OMH, although OMH has somehow found the funds to initiate these court orders for forced electroshock of more than a dozen clients!

Brief bio's of this week's guests:

Dennis Feld,
Deputy Director of New York State Mental Hygiene Legal Service (MHLS), conceived and cofounded the Special Litigation and Appeals Unit of MHLS. Mr. Feld has authored two New York State Office of Court Administration publications: Representing the Mentally Disabled Criminal Defendant: Post-Admission Proceedings and Dispositions; and Civil Litigation and Motion Practice in Mental Health Advocacy. He is currently Deputy Director of Special Litigation and Appeals with MHLS, although his position against forced treatment is not necessarily endorsed by that agency. He has served as a member of  the Board of Directors of National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy (NARPA).

Kim Darrow is a Principal Attorney with the Special Litigation and Appeals Unit of Mental Hygiene Legal Service (MHLS) in New York. He received a B.A. in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1969, and a J.D. from St. John's University School of Law in 1978. He has worked for MHLS since 1982. Kim co-authored (with Dennis Feld) a two-part series entitled "IOC [involuntary outpatient commitment] in NY: What Price Refusal," which appeared in two issues of the NARPA Rights Tenet.
