Prof. Gail Hornstein of Massachusetts is Next Guest on MindFreedom Free Live Internet Radio

Prof. Hornstein is now one of the world's experts on these "First Person Accounts of Madness," and maintains a list of more than 600 titles of such stories. Trained as a social psychologist and the author of a book and dozens of articles, Prof. Hornstein teaches at Mt. Holyoke college in Massachusetts.

Prof. Hornstein has a deep commitment as an academic psychologist, who is not a therapist and has no role in the mental health system, to advancing the ideas of the psychiatric survivor movement.

The MindFreedom News host is David Oaks, who also sums up the latest "mad news."

Phone numbers to call in live are announced during the show. If you can't get through keep trying. The show may start a minute or two late. You may e-mail in with any questions, comments or technical problems at any time. Your comments may be read live during the show. E-mail to: radio@mindfreedom.org

Prof. Hornstein offered this personal description about her work:

"I teach a course every fall to psychology students at my college, called 'First-Person Narratives of Madness," which uses survivors' autobiographical accounts -- no texts by professionals -- to challenge students thinking about 'mental illness' and 'treatment."'

"The bibliography I circulate currently (in its 3rd edition) has 600 titles -- and these are only those first-person accounts that have been published and are in English -- ranging from the 15th century to last year. The bibliography circulates all over the world and is updated every few years.

"I have also spent a great deal of time over the past five years in the UK, immersing myself in the survivor movement there, particularly the extraordinarily successful work of the Hearing Voices Network (HVN}.

"In fall 2005, I was a participant in HVN's first formal training course for hearing voices group facilitators, and I have been privileged to be invited to HVN groups all over Britain. I am always eager for US audiences to learn more about some of the exciting developments happening there."
