“I teach a course every fall to psychologystudents at my college, called ‘First-Person Narratives of Madness,”which uses survivors’ autobiographical accounts — no texts byprofessionals — to challenge students thinking about ‘mental illness’and ‘treatment.”‘

“The bibliography I circulate currently (in its 3rd edition) has 600titles — and these are only those first-person accounts that have beenpublished and are in English — ranging from the 15th century to lastyear. The bibliography circulates all over the world and is updatedevery few years.

“I have also spent a great deal of time over the past five years inthe UK, immersing myself in the survivor movement there, particularlythe extraordinarily successful work of the Hearing Voices Network (HVN}.

“In fall 2005, I was a participant in HVN’s first formal trainingcourse for hearing voices group facilitators, and I have beenprivileged to be invited to HVN groups all over Britain. I am alwayseager for US audiences to learn more about some of the excitingdevelopments happening there.”
