Oregon News to Change Mental Health System: Bills, Call to Governor

Psychiatric survivors testify for SB 363 and SB 364.

MindFreedom Oregon is working with a number of other groups throughout Oregon for human rights and alternatives in the mental health system.

Some Oregon news highlights:

  • News about supporting SB 363 and 364: These bills would put into law in Oregon the principles of self-determination. Oregon would finally have an office of mental health consumer affairs, an ombudsman office to handle complaints about Oregon's mental health system, and support for a mental health consumer advisory council. • News about opposing HB 3954 and HB 2995: These "dual disappointments" target privacy among Oregonians diagnosed with psychiatric disabilities. If both pass, then medical personnel could give away private information from our protected medical records about mental health. And police would create a database for certain individuals with psychiatric labels. For more info...
  • Call to the Governor! Here's how you can easily join in contacting the Governor via the web. For more info...
  • Oregon psychiatric survivors and mental health consumers are launching a state-wide alliance called the Oregon Consumer/Survivor Coalition. You are invited to participate. For more info...

Leah Harris

Leah Harris, a second generation psychiatric survivor, discovered MindFreedom in 2000 when she was 25 years old. Her first act in the mad movement was to tell her story of oppression and resistance, and to help edit stories for MindFreedom's Oral History Project. Since then, she has been working in various ways to help achieve the vision of MindFreedom: an end to all forms of psychiatric oppression, healing of all forms of "normality," and the creation of vibrant, colorful communities that honor and celebrate diversity, difference, and the full range of human experience.
