by David W. Oaks last modified 2007-10-03 16:22

Why join MindFreedom International. Special ways your membership benefits you, your family, and the social change movement for human rights and alternatives in mental health.

You Unite with MindFreedom Memers to Win Human Rights and Alternatives!

MindFreedom International effectively campaigns for a nonviolent revolution in the mental health system because of members like you.

You Keep MindFreedom Independent

Because MindFreedom International is almost entirely supported by members like you, MFI can remain independent of influence and funding from government, drug companies, mental health system or religions.

You Take Action…

...to support campaigns against human rights abuses such as forced electroshock, forced psychiatric drugging, solitary confinement, restraints, unscientific labeling, illegal experiments and discrimination.

You Challenge the Domination of the Psychiatric Drug Industry...

... and you help promote and discover empowering, humane, effective safe alternatives.

You Make History!

... by building a crucial coalition directly rooted in this crucial social change movement.

You May Access the Member-Only Section of This Web Site

Once you join, you may access a growing area of this web site that is available only to members. There MindFreedom seeks to network members with other members, build new affiliates, tell members' stories, provide you with news about MindFreedom activities and campaigns and committees, provide you access to member-only e-mail lists, and more.

You Recieve the MindFreedom Journal

Your membership entitles you to receive the MindFreedom Journal, an award-winning publication highlighting the activities and campaigns of our organization and its members in the struggle for human rights in mental health.

You May Use the Member-Only E-mail Lists

One way to stay in touch with MindFreedom and other members is through several member-only e-mail lists. There you may find the latest news, and connect with other members on lists devoted to topics such as international issues, USA issues, electroshock, general networking, and more. These lists are available for current members only. You may read about these lists and find out how to join in the MindFreedom Member Section of this web site.

You Get Mad Market Discounts!

Members get 10% or more off all the great and often difficult-to-find books and gear sold in the Mad Market.

You May Access Networking and Referrals

For members only, on a limited basis, MindFreedom can from time to time provide networking and referrals, to the extent resources are available. Especially if a member is threatened with involuntary psychiatric procedures, MindFreedom will often provide support in notifying other members, affiliates, sponsors and human rights groups, at the direction of the member.

You May Sign Up for the MindFreedom Shield

All current members may register for the MindFreedom Shield program. Then, if you face the threat of coerced psychiatry, you may request activation of a special organized alert system of other Shield registrants, MindFreedom members and others.

It's Your MindFreedom Office

A central goal of the staffed MindFreedom office is member services. MFI board has made it clear that MFI is member-driven and member-focused. If the MindFreedom International main office can answer any questions for members about MindFreedom services, please contact us.

We are MFI

Rae Unzicker & Justin Dart

Rae (1948-2001) was a psychiatric survivor activist who was a key bridge-builder between the entire disability movement and our movement to change the mentalh health system. Rae championed the National Council on Disability (NCD) report, From Privileges to Rights: People Labeled with Psychiatric Disabilities Speaking For Themselves. Rae is shown here with her beloved Justin Dart (1930 - 2002), widely considered one of the key disability activists of the last century, and also a bridge builder between our movements. Both Rae and Justin were MFI members. (Photo by Cookie Gant)
