MFI Crowd Exec Director Search

MindFreedom is a non-profit corporation and a network of affiliates and individual members that has been advocating for human rights and choice in the mental health system for 30 years.

In recent years, our efforts have been focused on two activities:

1) Helping people whose human rights are being violated through involuntary commitment to psychiatric treatment.  We do this by participating in nonviolent demonstrations at the annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association and by maintaining the MindFreedom Shield, a solidarity network of people who have committed to helping each other in the event they are involuntarily committed and forcibly treated.

2) Promoting and advocating for choice in the mental health system.  Our main activity has been putting on conferences that promote the following alternatives to the standard psychiatric treatment:

            • Soteria-type sanctuary houses
            • The Open Dialogue approach
            • Peer-run crisis respite houses
            • Intentional peer support
            • Sunrise Center for Withdrawal from Psychiatric Drugs
            • Hearing Voices Network
            • Wellness Recovery Action Program (WRAP)

In previous years, we have done the following:

      • Hunger Strike.  In 2003 six members vowed not to take any solid food until the American Psychiatric Association, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and/or the Surgeon General of the United States presented scientific evidence that mental disorders are biologically-based illnesses, that psychotropic drugs correct chemical imbalances in the brain and that psychotropic drugs are not harmful to people.  After 25 days, the group declared that adequate evidence had not been presented and ended the strike.
      • Mad Pride events.  These include festivals, street theatre, demonstrations in front of the Drug Industry’s Association in Washington, DC and booths at carnivals.
      • Public information.  This included publishing the MindFreedom Bulletin, occasional newsletters and maintaining an active and informative website – www.mindfreedom.org.
      • Lobbying and other efforts to influence public policy.  This occurred at municipal, state and Federal levels.
      • Contributed to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities.
      • Trained various movement groups in community organizing, crisis prevention and leadership development.
