Next scheduled forced electroshock of Ray Sandford

— filed under:

Ray Sandford of Minnesota lives at home out in the community in an assisted living group house basement apartment. Every few weeks he is escorted under court order for an involuntary outpatient electroshock, and he's had about 40. MindFreedom has a campaign to end the forced electroshocks of Ray Sandford.

Ray Sandford is not a criminal. And he's not violent. But even if someone were a violent criminal, it would not justify torture under humanitarian and American core values and principles.

But Ray Sandford is getting ongoing forced electroshocks over his clear, repeated, passionate, reasonable objections.

MindFreedom is now compiling a list of the dozens of agencies and individuals who receive some type of taxpayer funding who are supposed to help and protect Ray. A few are standing up for him, but most are remaining silent or actively engaging in supporting his ongoing forced electroshock.

After the Wednesday, 25 March 2009 forced electroshock, his next forced shock would be on, ironically, on tax day -- 15 April 2009.

For a mental health system claiming it lacks funding, somehow the system has found thousands upon thousands of dollars to surround Ray with guardians, social workers, escorts, psychiatrists, judges... maintaining his ongoing forced electroshock, all funded by the taxpayer.

Chuck Hughes is a psychiatric survivor activist from Santa Barbara, California.

"I find inspiration and mental support in MindFreedom," says Chuck. "I like associating with like-minded activists for human rights in mental health. When I go into a Board or Commission and say I am a member of MindFreedom International. It gives what I say a lot more validity and my voice carries a lot farther. My first of eight involuntarily institutionalizations was at age 23. I have witnessed much injustice in mental health. I have been involved with the user and survivor movement since 1992. My goal is to help stop forced outpatient psychiatric procedures, seclusion, restraints and other human rights violations, psychiatric abuse and torture. Of particular concern is the elimination of forced electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) on people of all ages."
